VSCP, Back to the Very Simple Control Protocol

News

2009-06-23 The latest release 0.2.7 is out. Vast improvements in vscpworks and many other things, read the story on SF https://sourceforge.net/news/?group_id=224170

2008-12-23 Sorry for the few updates here. Always forget to update here so look at the site instead. Promise to be better on this next year.

2008-02-08 Also check out the new release candidate in the download section . Some things are still missing but it would work great on both Linux and Windows.

2008-02-08 We just discovered this interesting and OPEN protocol project. The download of the latest complete spec in a single pdf-file from the download page didnt work, unfortunately. Can someone of the MLs please fix the pdf-link in the download section? Or at least make a note that the wiki content is the latest version at all and there is no current pdf…

The latest version of the spec. is always in the wiki but from time to time we (I) do a pdf of the complete content. Unfortunately the link was broken for the 1.4.2 version. Fixed now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

2006..2008 - Though the project is still active, news haven't been updated for a while. Until we fix this, you can ask questions to the ML. The other sections of the wiki are still updated with the latest developments. 1)

2006-06-07 - vscptcpctrl ActiveX control added. Interfaces the canald TCP/IP interface.

2004-08-19 Pictures and short info on the first VSCP hardware node prototype.

I have published some pictures and some short information about the first VSCP hardware node prototype for those interested in the VSCP and CANAL project.

2004-08-06 Initial Developers Release of VSCP (Very Simple Control Protocol) Released VSCP protocol, is a very simple and free protocol for SOHO (Small Office/HOme) automation tasks. The protocol is so easy that anyone can grasp the idea behind it in a few minutes. Therefore it's also very easy to construct and use VSCP aware modules and components. Nodes just start up and then serve the control solution reliable without hours of configuration.

VSCP is, as the name implies, a very simple protocol indeed. Due to its simplicity, it can be implemented on low end microcontrollers with limited resources.

Even though the protocol is very easy to use it is still very capable and can be used in very demanding control situation.

In addition to a very well specified message format the protocol supports global unique identifiers for nodes, a register model to give a flexible interface to node configuration and a model for node functionality. This model is EDA. EDA which stands for Event, Decision, Action tells how work is carried out by a node. A node can be as complex as needed and do very tough work but to the world it should export an interface following EDA. This is

1. Event. The node should be capable of reacting to VSCP messages. Each message is considered an event. The node itself decide which messages it is interested in except for a very small common subset of base VSCP protocol functionality messages.

2. Decision. The node has a hard defined or user configurable decision matrix. This matrix tells what should be done when a certain event is received.

3. Action. The action is what a node performs and the outcome of a decision.

The package consist of a service/daemon for the WIN32 platform, a test application in MFC/C++, a ActiveX control plus a test application for Visual Basic. A DLL is included for interfacing the server/service.

A release for Linux will follow in addition to low level stuff for Microchip PIC and Atmel AVR processors.

The code is release under the GPL and the LPGP license

2004-07-21 Initial release of the CANAL package available. I have just uploaded the first release off the CANAL (CAN Abstraction Layer ) software package. The stuff is available for download at at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53560 or at the download section of this site.

This is an initial release so it is probably full of bugs and a lot of things are missing. Hopefully it will reach a stable state and be useful later this year.

- Included today are a windows daemon app. and a windows service. Allows many clients to talk to many devices. Perfect for simulation. Linux version will follow.

- Driver for Lawicel CAN232 adapter

- Driver for CAN message logging to text file.

- Simple diagnostic application.

- Simple logger Window application.

Everything comes with source released under GPL and LGPL license.

2000-08-28 14:07

EDA and M.U.M.I.N. was approved as a project on sourceforge.

1) TODO: shouldn't we have a quarterly status report that we could publish here?
